Modern dry salt therapy has its origins from the salt mines and caves in Europe and Russia. As the workers were mining the salt (through chiseling, grinding and hammering at the salt), micro-sized salt particles were being disbursed into the air. Additionally there were ideal conditions below the Earth’s surface where air pressure and circulation, and humidity and temperature affected the quality of the environment. In this environment, miners were receiving many natural health benefits by breathing in the salt particles. Considering that mining jobs were usually recognized as dangerous to life and health, salt miners seemed to thrive on good health. They rarely had any respiratory issues and also looked younger due to great skin appearance. Upon studying the effects of this phenomena, Dr. Feliks Boczkowski, who was not only a great doctor but also a very smart business man, founded and opened the first health resort facility at the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland in 1839. He offered salt baths by utilizing natural brine from underground and mentioned in his book, that staying underground can be even more effective in asthma treatment than inhalations. In 1949, German physician, Dr. K.H. Spannahel observed during WWII that the people, who were hiding in salt mines and caves from the bombs, had respiratory health benefits. He proposed the creation of the Klyutert cave as an inpatient department to conduct a systematic approach to observe the climatological conditions and confirm the medical effectiveness of underground environments. The results of these studies, along with the teamwork of the Hungarian geologist, Dr. H. Kessler, laid the foundation of modern Speleotherapy, which is a modality utilizing the environmental benefits occurring underground. In 1958, Professor Mieczyslaw Skulimowski became the official physician of the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine and started regular treatment of patients in the salt chambers, initiating a new field of medicine – Subterraneotherapy, also called the Skulimowski method, which refers to underground “salted” environments exclusively. Shortly thereafter, in 1964 the world’s first facility of its kind, the underground “Kinga” Allergy Treatment Spa was created in the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine in Poland, then renamed to the “Kinga” Health Resort Hospital, where Professor Skulimowski became its first Director and focused on helping people with mostly respiratory conditions as well as explored other overall health benefits. His methods proved to be successful and spread to neighboring salt mines and caves in Europe as well as to former Soviet Union states. In 1968, the first speleo-hospital was opened in the Solotvyno salt mine in Ukraine. Having the attention from the medical community, the need for more convenient access became a necessity, in order to conduct specific studies and do more specific research. In 1985 in Odessa, Russia, the Institute of Balneology, in collaboration with the salt cavers from Uzhgorod, developed the first Halotherapy device. This was a device that was replicating the grinding and crushing of salt that would disperse the particles into the air. One could say that Halotherapy was “born” in the medical environment, in former Soviet Union. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the knowledge of the halotechnology and established Halotherapy protocols became accessible to the rest of the world. Traditionally, dry salt therapy is provided in a controlled space that is often referred to as salt rooms, salt caves, salt grottos, salt chambers and the like. Generally, there are two types of dry salt therapy environments: ### **Active** Active dry salt therapy is simple to understand. There are three primary characteristics of pure sodium chloride, NaCl, known as salt: 1. Salt is super absorbent (especially when it is completely dry) 2. Salt is anti-bacterial 3. Salt is anti-inflammatory This type of dry salt is placed into a **halogenerator** that then precisely grinds the salt into specific micro-sized particles and then disperses the salt aerosol into the air in a closed environment such as a room or chamber. As the salt travels in the salt room, these salt particles of dry sodium chloride are inhaled into the respiratory system. The dry salt naturally starts absorbing allergens, toxins and foreign substances into your lungs and throughout your respiratory tract. Dry salt may help to reduce inflammation and open airway passages. The micro-sized crystal structure of pure NaCl particles breaks loose and clears out all of the ‘bad stuff’. This is the basis for how dry salt therapy can impact people suffering from respiratory conditions like allergies, asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, COPD and others. The properties of dry salt also absorb impurities and provide anti-bacterial properties that benefit the skin such as acne, psoriasis and eczema as well as regulates the skin’s micro-circulation. The smaller particles can reach beneath the skin’s surface and absorb moisture towards the skin. The larger salt particles land on the skin and absorb any bacterial and foreign substances. The dry salt accelerates cell rejuvenation and improves skin rigidity. The climate conditions in a dry salt room therefore must maintain certain temperature and humidity levels and proper ventilation to ensure the efficacy of the salt therapy and provide a ‘clean-air’ environment for the consumer. ### **Passive** Passive salt rooms were created to mimic the natural salt caves found in Europe. These salt rooms may have large volumes of various types of salt décor inside a climate-controlled room. There may be Dead Sea, Himalayan, Rock or other salts lining the walls, ceilings and floors in these types of rooms. While today’s modern passive salt rooms often look like a natural salt cave environment, they do not provide the same salt air particles provided in natural salt caves since there are no direct actions like the mining activities (crushing, grinding, chiseling, etc.) to produce salt particles in the air. There are some known properties of having large amounts of salt in this type of confined space that provides a clean-air environment and alters the energy frequencies in the room. Some salt dust may occur from the disturbance of the salt by people walking through the salt on the floor or by some other means. There are claims that heating Himalayan salt, similar to bulb heated salt lamps, generates negative ions which eliminate the positive ions that stem from electromagnetic waves from the various technologies and pollution that we are constantly exposed to. Recipients of salt therapy treatments sometimes believe that they should be feeling or even seeing a lot of salt in the air when visiting a properly tuned Halotherapy room. However, this is often not true. There are essentially three factors that determine the effectiveness of salt treatments: 1\. **Particle size**: salt particles should be 1-5 microns (much too small to be seen by the human eye) and larger particles aren’t helpful, at least in regards to respiratory health 2\. **Particle concentration**: This can vary a bit but usually should not be under .5mg/m3 and not over 9mg/m3 Our salt cave is tuned to give you between 4mg/m3 and 6mg/m3 3\. **Duration** of the session, determining for how long you are exposed to the dry salt mist Temperature and humidity also play an important role, but the three factors above are the most important ones. Some salt rooms/salt caves have particles that are too large and sometimes also concentration levels that are too high. This is primarily because only the best salt generators can separate small particles from large ones and measure the salt concentration in the cave. Only those kinds of halogenerators can adjust their functioning to keep the concentration steady in the treatment room. Most generators just pump salt into the air during the entire session—irrespective of concentration levels in the room. See below for a photo of our salt generator’s parameters during a session (blue line on graph gives you the actual measured concentration; green lines denote minimum and maximum concentration levels) A high concentration of salt (and often way too large particle size) can feel very attractive, because it lets you know “something is happening” but it is usually not a good indication that the treatment is working well. If it feels by the end of a session that you are ready to get out because the high salt concentration makes it hard for you to breathe, that is usually not a great sign. Generally, the effects should feel subtle during a session and most of the benefits should become apparent over time (sometimes a few hours after a single session, but mostly after a few sessions spaced a few days apart.) Usually you should not be able to see the salt in the air with the naked eye, but it can easily be seen by an infrared camera, or if you take a photo with a flash at the end of a session (as in the image above.) It will be washed out from the flash reflecting off the micro particles. There is one caveat to this: Benefits for the skin can continue with larger salt particle size and also with higher concentrations. The larger particles usually focus the benefits more on the outer layers of the skin, while the smaller particles can also travel to deeper layers. Ionic Foot Baths Our ionic foot baths use a state of the art, bio-energy charger. The system works through the medium of water by making available extra energy that the living cell can utilize. It charges the water and will give up some of the charge to the body on contact. There are a few contraindications, where we do not recommend use of our ionic foot baths: - Any individual that is pregnant or may be pregnant should not use the system. - Any individual that has transplanted organs should not use the system. - Any individual that has any implanted electronic device; (such as but not limited to a pacemaker) should not use the system. ### What To Bring **Generally:** Bring as little as possible. If you are doing multiple services, we will move you from service to service as efficiently as possible. For most services you will be wearing the clothes you come in with. Leave your electronic devices at home or turn them off. Everything you need to enjoy your spa services will be provided. We ask people not to bring food; and for most services, we ask you to turn your cell phones off. **Salt Cave:** If you want to have some water with you in the salt cave, please bring a water bottle that closes. Only water in closed bottles is allowed. No other drink or food is allowed in the cave (as a spill will potentially melt or ruin the salt on the floor). We do provide high-quality drinking water, but we do not have bottles available for our guests. ### What To Wear **Salt Cave:** Regular, comfortable clothes (temperature is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit; blankets are provided). You will need to take your shoes off to enter the cave. There is granular salt on the floor. We suggest wearing white or light gray socks, as they show the least signs of salt dust after the session and also keep the salt cleanest. **Ionic Foot Bath:** Regular, comfortable clothes. You will remove your shoes and socks for the foot bath. Your feet are in water up to about your ankles. **Infrared Sauna:** Our saunas are in private rooms, which include a small changing area and the sauna cabin itself. Only you (or your group) will be in the room together, and you will get dressed again before entering a public space. We suggest dressing down to your comfort before entering the cabin. You can simply wear the fresh towels that we provide, or bring a swimming suit if you prefer. **Massages:** Our massage therapists will lead you to your private massage room (or shared, if getting a couples massage) and give you time to undress and get on the table and under the covers before your treatment. Undress to the level you are comfortable with. After your massage you will have time to get dressed in privacy again. ### Gratuity Gratuity is not included in the cost of your spa treatment but is greatly appreciated by your therapist or spa associate. If you enjoyed your treatment, feel free to leave a gratuity based on the value of the treatment received. Gratuity envelopes are provided at the reception desk, or you may add gratuity to your credit card payment if desired. We believe that a gratuity is a gesture of gratitude for excellent service and is entirely up to our guests. ### Cancelations/Changes Please keep our cancellation policy in mind. It applies to both cancellations and late changes. For most services, there is a 50 percent late cancellation/change fee, starting 48 hours before the start of your service(s); if canceling less than 24 hours before your service (or in case of a no-show), the full price of the service is due. In rare cases, if we can re-book your service on short notice, we may be able to reduce or waive a portion of these fees. ### Kids and Minors - **Salt Cave:** For regular, public salt cave sessions, the age limit is 16 years. These sessions require silence and allow no use of personal electronic equipment, so these are not appropriate for younger children. However, for private salt cave sessions (limited to your group only), children of any age are welcome. - **Massages:** We require parental consent for any minors. EACH PROVISION OF THESE TERMS OF USE THAT PROVIDES FOR A LIMITATION OF LIABILITY, DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTIES, OR EXCLUSION OF DAMAGES IS TO ALLOCATE THE RISKS UNDER THIS TERMS OF USE BETWEEN THE PARTIES.  THIS ALLOCATION IS AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF THE BASIS OF THE BARGAIN BETWEEN THE PARTIES.  EACH OF THESE PROVISIONS IS SEVERABLE AND INDEPENDENT OF ALL OTHER PROVISIONS OF THESE TERMS OF USE.  THE LIMITATIONS IN THIS SECTION WILL APPLY EVEN IF ANY LIMITED REMEDY FAILS OF ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE. 11. **Governing Law**.  This Terms of Use is governed by the laws of the State of CO without regard to conflict of law principles.  To the extent that any lawsuit or court proceeding is permitted hereunder, you and Sponsor agree to submit to the personal and exclusive jurisdiction of the state courts and federal courts located within the state of CO for the purpose of litigating all such disputes.  Sponsor operates the Service from its offices in CO and it makes no representation that Materials included in the Service are appropriate or available for use in other locations. 12. **General**.  This Terms of Use, together with the Privacy Policy and any other agreements expressly incorporated by reference, constitute the entire and exclusive understanding and agreement between you and Sponsor regarding your use of and access to the Service, and except as expressly permitted above may be amended only by a written agreement signed by authorized representatives of all parties to this Terms of Use.  You may not assign or transfer this Terms of Use or your rights hereunder, in whole or in part, by operation of law or otherwise, without our prior written consent.  Sponsor may assign this Terms of Use at any time without notice.  The failure to require performance of any provision will not affect Sponsor’s right to require performance at any time thereafter, nor will a waiver of any breach or default of this Terms of Use or any provision of this Terms of Use constitute a waiver of any subsequent breach or default or a waiver of the provision itself.  Use of section headers in this Terms of Use is for convenience only and will not have any impact on the interpretation of particular provisions.  If any part of this Terms of Use is held to be invalid or unenforceable, the unenforceable part will be given effect to the greatest extent possible and the remaining parts will remain in full force and effect.  Upon termination of this Terms of Use, any provision that by its nature or express terms should survive will survive such termination or expiration. 13. **Dispute Resolution and Arbitration**. 13.1 **Generally**.  In the interest of resolving disputes between you and Sponsor in the most expedient and cost effective manner, you and Sponsor agree that any and all disputes arising in connection with this Terms of Use and your use of, and access to, the Service will be resolved by binding arbitration.  Arbitration is more informal than a lawsuit in court.  Arbitration uses a neutral arbitrator instead of a judge or jury, may allow for more limited discovery than in court, and can be subject to very limited review by courts.  Arbitrators can award the same damages and relief that a court can award.  Our agreement to arbitrate disputes includes, but is not limited to all claims arising out of or relating to any aspect of this Terms of Use, whether based in contract, tort, statute, fraud, misrepresentation or any other legal theory, and regardless of whether the claims arise during or after the termination of this Terms of Use.  YOU UNDERSTAND AND AGREE THAT, BY ENTERING INTO THIS TERMS OF USE, YOU AND SPONSOR ARE EACH WAIVING THE RIGHT TO A TRIAL BY JURY OR TO PARTICIPATE IN A CLASS ACTION. 13.2 **Exceptions**.  Notwithstanding Section13.1, we both agree that nothing in this Terms of Use will be deemed to waive, preclude, or otherwise limit either of our right to: (i)bring an individual action in small claims court; (ii)pursue enforcement actions through applicable federal, state, or local agencies where such actions are available; (iii)seek injunctive relief in a court of law; or (iv)to file suit in a court of law to address intellectual property infringement claims. 13.3 **Arbitrator**.  Any arbitration between you and Sponsor  will be governed by the Commercial Dispute Resolution Procedures and the Supplementary Procedures for Consumer Related Disputes (collectively, “AAA Rules”) of the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”), as modified by this Terms of Use, and will be administered by the AAA.  The AAA Rules and filing forms are available online at www.adr.org, by calling the AAA at 1-800-778-7879, or by contacting Sponsor. 13.4 **Notice; Process**.  A party who intends to seek arbitration must first send a written notice of the dispute to the other, by certified mail or Federal Express (signature required), or if we do not have a physical address on file for you, by submitting a form here: TOS Contact.  The Notice must: (i)describe the nature and basis of the claim or dispute; and (ii)set forth the specific relief sought (“Demand”).  We agree to use good faith efforts to resolve the claim directly, but if we do not reach an agreement to do so within thirty (30) days after the Notice is received, you or Sponsor  may commence an arbitration proceeding.  During the arbitration, the amount of any settlement offer made by you or Sponsor must not be disclosed to the arbitrator until after the arbitrator makes a final decision and award, if any.  If our dispute is finally resolved through arbitration in your favor, Sponsor will pay you: (a)the amount awarded by the arbitrator, if any; (b)the last written settlement amount offered by Sponsor in settlement of the dispute prior to the arbitrator’s award; or (c)$1,000, whichever is greater. 13.5 **Fees**.  If you commence arbitration in accordance with this Terms of Use, Sponsor will reimburse you for your payment of the filing fee, unless your claim is for greater than $10,000, in which case the payment of any fees will be decided by the AAA Rules.  Any arbitration hearings will take place at a location to be agreed upon in CO, provided that if the claim is for $10,000 or less, you may choose whether the arbitration will be conducted: (i)solely on the basis of documents submitted to the arbitrator; (ii)through a non-appearance based telephonic hearing; or (iii)by an in-person hearing as established by the AAA Rules in the county (or parish) of your billing address.  If the arbitrator finds that either the substance of your claim or the relief sought in the Demand is frivolous or brought for an improper purpose (as measured by the standards set forth in Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 11(b)), then the payment of all fees will be governed by the AAA Rules.  In such case, you agree to reimburse Sponsor  for all monies previously disbursed by it that are otherwise your obligation to pay under the AAA Rules.  Regardless of the manner in which the arbitration is conducted, the arbitrator will issue a reasoned written decision sufficient to explain the essential findings and conclusions on which the decision and award, if any, are based.  The arbitrator may make rulings and resolve disputes as to the payment and reimbursement of fees or expenses at any time during the proceeding and upon request from either party made within fourteen (14) days of the arbitrator’s ruling on the merits.
